격리 (Lockdown)
예 두려움이 있어요.
그래요 격리되어 있어요.
그래요 사재기도 하고 있어요.
그래요 질병이 돌고 있어요.
그래요 심지어 죽기도 해요.
그러나
여러 해 동안 소음으로 가득하던 우한에서는
새소리를 다시금 들을 수 있다고 하네요.
몇 주 동안 조용히 지내고 나니
하늘은 더 이상 매연으로 뒤덮여 있지 않고
푸른 회색으로 맑아졌다고 하네요.
아씨시의 거리에서는
텅 빈 광장 너머로
사람들이 서로를 향해 노래 부르고
창문을 열어놓아
홀로 있는 이들이
이웃 가족들의 소리를 들을 수 있게 한대요.
아일랜드 서부의 한 호텔에서는
집을 떠나지 못하는 사람들에게
무상 음식을 배달해 드린다고 하네요.
오늘 내가 아는 한 젊은 여성은
이웃 노인들이 도움을 청할 수 있도록
자기 전화번호가 적힌 전단지를 돌리느라
바쁘게 이웃을 돌아다니고 있어요.
오늘 교회들과 유대교 회당들, 회교 사원들, 불교 절들이
집 없는 이들과 병자들, 지친 이들을
맞아들일 준비를 하고 있습니다.
온 세상에서 사람들이 천천히 움직이며 생각에 잠기고
온 세상 사람들이 이웃들을 새로운 방식으로 바라보고 있습니다.
온 세상 사람들이 새로운 현실에 눈을 뜨고 있습니다.
우리가 정말로 얼마나 큰가를,
우리가 정말로 통제할 수 있는 것이 얼마나 적은 가를,
무엇이 정말로 중요한 것인가를 보고,
사랑에 눈을 뜨고 있습니다.
그러니 우리는 기도하며
그래요 두려움이 있지만
미워할 필요는 없다는 걸 기억합니다.
그래요 격리되어 있지만
외로울 필요는 없다는 걸,
그래요 공황으로 사재기를 할 망정
야비할 필요는 없다는 걸,
그래요 전염병이 돌더라도
영혼의 질병에 걸릴 필요는 없다는 걸,
심지어 죽음이 오더라도
언제나 사랑의 재탄생이 있다는 걸 기억합니다.
깨어나서 지금 어떻게 살아야 할지 선택하세요.
오늘, 숨을 쉬세요.
공황의 공장 소음 뒤에서
새들이 다시금 지저귀는 소리에 귀를 기울이세요.
하늘이 맑아지고,
봄이 오고 있고,
우리는 언제나 사랑으로 둘러싸여 있습니다.
그대 영혼의 창문을 열고
비록 만질 수는 없을지라도
텅 빈 광장을 가로질러,

Lockdown
Yes there is fear.
Yes there is isolation.
Yes there is panic buying.
Yes there is sickness.
Yes there is even death.
But,
They say that in Wuhan after so many years of noise
You can hear the birds again.
They say that after just a few weeks of quiet
The sky is no longer thick with fumes
But blue and grey and clear.
They say that in the streets of Assisi
People are singing to each other
across the empty squares,
keeping their windows open
so that those who are alone
may hear the sounds of family around them.
They say that a hotel in the West of Ireland
Is offering free meals and delivery to the housebound.
Today a young woman I know
is busy spreading fliers with her number
through the neighbourhood
So that the elders may have someone to call on.
Today Churches, Synagogues, Mosques and Temples
are preparing to welcome
and shelter the homeless, the sick, the weary
All over the world people are slowing down and reflecting
All over the world people are looking at their neighbours in a new way
All over the world people are waking up to a new reality
To how big we really are.
To how little control we really have.
To what really matters.
To Love.
So we pray and we remember that
Yes there is fear.
But there does not have to be hate.
Yes there is isolation.
But there does not have to be loneliness.
Yes there is panic buying.
But there does not have to be meanness.
Yes there is sickness.
But there does not have to be disease of the soul
Yes there is even death.
But there can always be a rebirth of love.
Wake to the choices you make as to how to live now.
Today, breathe.
Listen, behind the factory noises of your panic
The birds are singing again
The sky is clearing,
Spring is coming,
And we are always encompassed by Love.
Open the windows of your soul
And though you may not be able
to touch across the empty square,
Sing.
